People about Cosplay...
To answer your main questions, No and No. Cosplay is supposed to be about inclusiveness, fun, and showing your love for a character.
That being said, as with any group of people, there will be jerks on both sides. There will be those that make their costumes and look down on those that buy them, and vice versa. Jerks can be found at all levels of cosplay, just like regular society. And just like regular society, you have the choice to ignore the jerks and go your own way.
If you are happy with your cosplay, not competing in a 100% bought cosplay and are having fun, that really is all that matters.
People who make their cosplays receive just as many nasty comments and critiques as those that buy them by the way.
Absolutely not! There are exceptions, but even seasoned cosplayers who enjoy the crafting side of things will often buy parts of their costume. There’s an entire segment of the community that does commission work who wouldn’t have any business at all without the parts of the community who find skipping to the dressing up stage to be most fulfilling.
So long as you are having a good time and participating ethically (not taking credit for a costume someone else made, for example), you are doing cosplay exactly right!
Cosplay is a fun way for fans of shows/movies to express themselves through their appearance. It also tests their creativity, and they get to meet people who share the same interests as them if they choose to go to cosplay conventions.
In my opinion, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with cosplay. I don’t see why people insult cosplayers simply because they think it’s a waste of time, or that it’s just plain silly. All they have to do is keep their mouths shut and not say anything rude. And complaining about cosplayers who haven’t managed to look exactly like the character they’re displaying as is stupid. They’ve put in so much effort to do something that they love, and here the a$$holes are, dissing them for enjoying themselves.
I’m not even a cosplayer, but I believe that they deserve to have a good time.
